The deceipt & lies of Alton Carroll (NAFPS) and Arvol Looking Horse

Whatever Suzanne Dupree’s agenda is, the one thing she is guilty of is exploiting her people’s traditions. To stand and pose for photographs with a pipe

Dear Alton Carroll & ALH,
You continue to put your foot in your mouths…
as well as continue to slander me without a shred
of evidence to support your lies and allegations against me.
Do you think this Minneconjou is exploiting his peoples
traditions by posing for photos with a Cannunpa?
All our Traditional people were photographed with their
Cannunpas…one delegation that went to Washington DC,
every single man there had their Cannunpa in their hands
or arms…do you think everyone of these Lakotas were
exploiting their Lakota peoples traditions?
The only fakes or frauds are you and Arvol Looking Horse…
About yet another one of your lies…about my film,
“Gift From the Ancestors”…
Where is it, Carroll???
Where is all the money John Lekay spent on financing
my film you put all over the internet?
There isn’t a film, you idiot!
Never was…and, I played you and your crew, like a
Lakota flute….
I wanted to show all concerned, for every action there is a counter action
by you, ALH or AIM to continue to try and control that which is Sacred.
You make fun of my vocation, of hairdressing, however…
I can’t for the life of me understand why where you teach in Texas, that the
Dean would even allow you around young minds with the poison and hate mongering
you spew to protect yourself and ALH’s investments in trying to make people believe your lies.
I am registered at Cheyenne River, and I am more Lakota than many of the AIM members themselves…on my site their blood quantum is listed, and it isn’t much Indian blood at all for all the ink AIM gets, and got from the media during the staged Seige of Wounded Knee.
I don’t see you addressing Marie Elk Head Fiddlers UTube Video…where Marie shares with the viewers how the lie began with AIM looking for the Pipe/Cannunpa, and the Looking Horses NOT having It, and taking another Cannunpa from the wall…saying to AIM….this one is It.
When It was not…that is fraud and an outright lie.

Marie Elk Head Fiddlers UTube video shows as early as 1972, AIM was looking for the Cannunpa, and when they thought they found It at Wounded Knee, they destroyed what they thought was It…along with Riegert’s book manuscript called….
“Quest for the Pipe of the Sioux, As Viewed From Wounded Knee.
But, the manuscript for “Quest” was NOT lost, another copy was in the editing process with Paul Manhart SJ… who, along with Ralph “Doc” Hubbard published “Quest” (copyright 1975) after Riegert’s death in 1974.
Nor was the Catlinite Cannunpa lost…if one believes Beatrice Medicine, & Phil Lane Sr…upstanding Tetuwan spiritual Elders and educators.
The Cannunpa was there all the time with Fools Crow, the Cannunpa his Uncle Nicolas Black Elk, and he lovingly cared for and kept safe from harm and ego, hidden yet in plain sight, cared for by the Hunoup speaking Bear Medicine Society Tetuwan Elders….never in the care of anyone else from Martha Bad Warrior and Andrew Dupris to Nicolas Black Elk and Frank Fools Crow…to my Father, Calvin…and, then to me.
So Carroll, slander is so expensive…if you cannot prove your lies & allegations against me….
An apology would be in order…one in writing, and on every site you posted your slander
against me.
I am sure your Dean will NOT be impressed with anyone who thinks he can manipulate history for their own personal benefit, at the expense of others…
Look who the real exploiters and frauds are….you & ALH, not I!!!
I can prove who I am, can you?

  2. Some of My Experiences with Non-Federally Recognized Tribes, oh, and Al Carroll, too

I am not federally enrolled. I once obtained a ‘temporary’ card from a state recognized Cherokee tribe in Alabama — but I got frustrated and quit the process. They seemed to have lost the documentation I had sent them and were asking me for things they already had. I even visited them, told them about my desire for membership, showed them some of my material, and was told I’d have NO TROUBLE and that I had enough documentation. I grew worried as a year passed and I had heard nothing from them. I contacted them again. They knew nothing of my application, now that I had visited them the previous year during their annual pow-wow — the people in charge then had no idea I had just talked to their predicessors (sp?), or that they had told me in person I would be accepted. THEY HAD LOST MY MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION I guess — and I spent so much time on it! I spent so much money on that trip to meet them and they had no recollection of it! They did give me a ‘temporary tribal membership’ Oh, I just threw my hands in the air and gave up. I had from the beginning thought they disliked Oklahomans and this was the proof! Well, that is how I felt then.

Before that, a few years even further back, I did get involved with several FAKE Cherokee tribes. As for other groups, NOT state or federally recognized — from my experiences with them, I felt many were just faking it. I started researching them to expose them as fake, and was in contact with officials of the Cherokee Nation (the REAL one, based in Tahlequah — I am a proud Oklahoman, my ancestors can first be traced here in 1832). I’d ask them about a certain group and they’d give the scoop on them. Eventually I got in touch with Al Carroll’s group. He was interested in fake religions more than fake tribes. Anyhow, after 2 or 3 years — a long story — after I cut ties with one Eastern Message Board (www.saponitown.com/forum) — which was difficult as I felt at home there — I also cut ties with NAFPS several months later. One of the founders of that board asked me to refrain from talking more about it to NAFPS and I obliged as I trusted THAT person. I told NAFPS I would no longer comment about it. I perceived that they took it as a weakness in me — and I wasn’t free to tell they ‘why’ my change in attitude came about, and I departed from comments there al together. I suppose enough years have now passed that it doesn’t matter. So . . . I don’t trust many groups out there. I think some of what Al did WAS good, in exposing frauds! But I also think at times, he might have gone too far. Some of his people did go too far, and the body always does what the head wants it to do.

Some fake tribes do have a historical basis, but they have integrated many falsehoods into them, and it is hard to distinguish the fake from the true. I think many people who think they have a little Cherokee blood in reality have a little Eastern Siouan. Ideas about Portuguese, Atlantean, Turkish, Phoenician, Jewish, Welsh, or God knowns what else Indians belong with Dave Ducovney in the X-files — but the people who believe these ridiculous stories PROBABLY do have some small amount of Indian blood — these frauds who perpetrate these ridiculous stories have just taken advantage of our VERY STRONG DESIRE to find our roots. I have argued both sides in an effort to find the truth, with seems to be in between. Some of us have a little Indian blood, we CAN’T be federally enrolled. But the truth isn’t found in stories of the “Yahoo Child Massacre” (it never happened) nor in stories of lost Spanish troops under Pardo changing allegiance and becoming Portuguese, and having their descendants talk about it 300 years later. Search DEEPER!

However recently, I have had a change of heart towards some of the fake tribes — perhaps many are just trying to do the best they can with the process they are forced to work under. We want to claim ALL of our heritage and become damned if we do or damned if we don’t! Someone doesn’t like you, no matter what you do, so you might as well take the stand that is allows you the best conscious. I think I have done that, but there is always that gnawing voice saying I could have done this or that better. If you don’t have these regrets you are probably a child, or have never put your hide on the line for a principle.

I will NOT say everything Al did was destructive — some was helpful! There ARE jerks out there who make money off of saying they are ‘Indian’, and make up fake ceremonies!

But he did go too far at times — I KNOW IT! They did slander people. Remember the French Revolution — it started out good and before you know it, the people who started the Revolution were having their heads cut off as well, for saying they had gone too far. It didn’t pay to be moderate then, and it doesn’t pay now. I try to be moderate, by the way, so I know! 🙂 Neither he nor his enemies will appreciate what I am saying, and I don’t care! I’m not vying for the presidency of any unrolled Indian fan club! I think I’ll stay independent of all that mess. Some people needed to be stopped and were! But others were just caught off guard, surprised, and taken out of context.

I also always use my REAL NAME and don’t trust people who don’t! What have they got to hide?

    Well long winded enough —

    , best wishes,

    Vance Hawkins

  3. Reblogged this on Looking Back Woman-Suzanne Dupree blog and commented:

Carroll was proven not even to be Indian at all after John LeKay interviewed descendent of Geronimo, the very tribe Carroll said he was enrolled at…no record of Carroll’s enrollment. MOST of the moderators on NAFPS were white or wannabes attacking authentic tribal people targeted by Carroll. The truth always prevails! Carroll, like Swan/Santelles only helped more people find out the truth for themselves. In the 1950’s registered member was the term used now as enrolled member when speaking about ones tribal status.

I don’t care much for Al anymore. But saying he was part of Geronimo’s band of Apache (today called Fort Sill Apache) isn’t what he told me. He told me he was Lipan Apache. I think they are in South Texas maybe? Geronimo’s people are Chiricauhua — (I’m pretty sure that’s misspelled) — Apache — a completely different bunch. Ft Sill Apache were brought to Oklahoma and live north of Lawton. Most Chiricuaha’s are still in Arizona. Lipan are an entirely different group. I don’t know anything about ‘Looking Back Woman’. I don’t know much more about Al or his NAFPS other than for a year or two or so I read and posted on his site, and then I quit reading and/or posting there. One of his people turned on me — never knew why, don’t care to know why either — and I quit posting there. Haven’t heard anything about him in years. Don’t know why this message was sent to my email address. Didn’t know his web site (NAFPS) was still up. Vance Hawkins

Okay I do remember more after looking at some of what you have. I was interested in his site mostly because there are 200 websites calling themselves the Cherokee/Chickamauga/Tsalagi Tribe/Band/Nation of (name any river, mtn, creek, state, or region). I became tired of all these fake groups. I have since reconsidered much of that . . . a lot of things are just a grey area. Al was interested more in fake Indian religion than fake tribes. I don’t know what’s right or wrong and haven’t contacted that group in a decade at least. If they were talking about something that was fake Cherokee I’d read it and maybe comment. Anything else, I was out of my league. Well I was interested in the Catawba, but other than that, I don’t know and didn’t know what they were taking about. Vance
