An issue of potentially powerful implications in Native America is brewing with the claims that The Sacred Pipe of the Lakotas (the Cannupa Wakan-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin of the Oceti-Shakowin, the Seven Council Fires of the Tetuwan Nations) is in the hands of a Tetuwan Minnecoujou Lakota woman named Suzanne Dupree-HakiktaWin or Looking Back Woman.
The issue is potentially divisive because it raises questions about the Pipe-Cannunpa Bundle held by Arvol Looking Horse, who is known fraudulently, as the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe, promoted & protected by the American Indian Movement in AIMs bid to control the Sacred within Indian Country in North America, & now beyond…
While the issue is particularly pertinent to the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate (People), others may find it of interest, for it cuts to the heart of what is the Sacred Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, or Canunpa Wakan, and what It means.
On her website, “Looking Back Woman Speaks” (www.lookingbackwoman.com), Dupree outlines her claims, including who she is, where she came from, and how the Pipe-Cannunpa she declares is The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin came into her possession.
She says: “I have in my possession the Cannupa Wakan, the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, used by Grandfather Frank Fools Crow as Ceremonial Chief and Holy Man of the Western Tetuwans during the first through fourth White Buffalo Calf Pipe Revival Ceremony and Sun Dance held at Pine Ridge, South Dakota between 1970 (the vision to carry the Cannunpa)1971 and 1975, the series of WBCPW revival ceremonies & accompanying Sun Dances, finishing at Green Grass… the great vision & blessing we were about to recieve,” with the adult naming of HakiktaWin-Looking Back Woman by Frank Fools Crow.
It is this Canunpa, she outlines, that is considered The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, or the traditional Ceremonial Canunpa of the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate which, she claims, was never held by Arvol Looking Horse, or his Looking Horse family.
A reading of the site, www.lookingbackwoman.ca details there were originally two Pipes-Cannunpas traditionally used as the Cannupa Wakan — one, the buffalo leg bone Cannunpa given the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate by PtesanWi, White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman, and another carved catlinite/pipestone Cannunpam made from the blood of the people… used in conjunction with the above in public ceremony, which she explains is the Oyate’s traditional Ceremonial Cannupa Wakan.
It is this Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin she claims that she has, along, presumably, with all rights and authority to speak, while questioning if the original Cannupa Wakan even exists, making the Cannunpa Wakan she carries, in effect The Cannupa Wakan-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin of the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate.
The significance of White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman and The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin to the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate is explained most cogently by Ceremonial Chief & Holy man, Frank Fools Crow, who has said: These Sacred ceremonies & teachings are for all of mankind.
It is the Sacred Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin which allows and confers that knowledge, when treated in the way that PtesanWi, White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman prescribed.
It is the most Holy of Holies for the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate, or lila wakan, Very Sacred.
The white buffalo itself is considered Wakan (Sacred), with prophecies that the birth of a white buffalo calf would be a sign that it would be near the time when PtesanWi, White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman, would return to purify the world and to return spiritual harmony and balance to the Earth and all our relations, all beings.
Indeed, in the legend, PtesanWi, White Buffalo Woman, said in parting with the people: “The four ages of creation are in me; I am the four ages. I will come to see you in every generation cycle …
Toksha ake wacinyanitin ktelo, I shall see you again.”
The questions Dupree raises are many, including:
Does Looking Back Woman carry The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin traditionally used as the Ceremonial Cannunpa?
Does the original Cannupa Wakan of the Oceti Shakowin still exist?
Yes It does!!!!
If Arvol Looking Horse has the traditionally-used Cannunpa, or even the original Cannupa Wakan of the Oceti Shakowin, why are neither Cannunpas used in ceremony among Oyate as commonly occurred throughout the last century, and into the 1970s?
Looking Horse is a fraud & has nothing! He does not have the Cannunpa Wakan..proven fact!
Dupree fully explains her history and her questions.
These are not idle claims, nor is Dupree to be taken lightly.
She states her standing to bring these questions forthrightly by her birthright & Lakota linage, and everything she says is documented.
The question for the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate to determine for itself — and it is a matter purely pertaining to the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate.
And, now the world, since the International Communities have been bilked for millions of dollars by the AIM & Arvol Looking Horses frauds — is how true is it, as true as AIM member, John Graham being convicted of Anna Mae Aquashs murder in Dec. 2010!
And is it The Truth?
Arvol Looking Horse has, so far, not publicly responded to Looking Back Womans claims….for he does not have the Cannunpa Wakan, the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin in the first place.
And, for her part, Dupree’s website is now 7 years old and still constantly has new & informative, accurate information being added.
Already, www.lookingbackwoman.ca, her WordPress blog, Twitter, Twicpic Eblogger & Facebook social networking sites are finding their way around Cyberspace in Indian Country with much exciting comments among the Indigenous listserves.
There could be much more to this story to come….in the future, with the indictments for the American Indian Movement murderers, rapists, pedofiles…and, Arvol Looking Horses Cannunpa fraud-hoax.
Outside of The Truth about The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, Dupree raises questions that could prove even more unsettling for the other truths she does brings.
For example, she notes the AIM patriarchal bent of Native society today, which is not in keeping with traditional ways.
Specifically, she scolds “The Protection of Ceremonies” controversy that Arvol Looking Horse engineered (See “On The ‘Protection’ of Ceremonies”) that would — horribly — have the federal government intervene to make the Cannunpa solely the property of certain individuals within the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate, and prevent others from practicing any Native Spirituality they claim as their own without their permission.
She notes: “I find it interesting that not a single Unci-Grandmother was allowed to speak during the meeting, when it was decided to write & implement Arvol Looking Horses Proclamation in 2003.
When support was not given by true Tetuwan traditional Lakota spiritual leaders, Bernard Red Cherries shut the meeting down…leaving many people still looking for the gathering, & others lost, when they arrived…the meeting-gathering was already over.
In fact, all women were excluded from Looking Horse-AIM Proclaimation discussions.
It was not like that in the old days.
Uncis-Grandmothers had the respect of everyone, and they were the last word.
I, HakiktaWin am standing up for the Uncis-Grandmothers.”
As Dupree explains, in the old ways, each of the 7 Council Fires of the Tetuwan Oyate had two Pipes: one carried by a man, one by a woman; and all were brought to Council.
There was balance of men and of the women.
Yet, largely, in Native America today, women are not given their due respect.
Indeed, all would be denied practice of Native American Spirituality or only “allowed” if recognized by a few AIM men, given the thinking of those who claim they hold the Cannunpa Wakan-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, and the authority they claim derived from It.
I, HakiktaWin challenges this notion, its basis and its expression as being counter to the teaching of PtesanWi, White Buffalo Woman, and traditional Native culture.
Says Dupree: “How can anyone in AIM or Arvol Looking Horses camp say who is, or is not qualified to perform ceremonies?
Is it not the Creator who touches one’s heart and calls them to the altar?
By demanding language, blood quantum (check out AIMs blood quantum…) and other self-serving requirements, dogma and doctrine are being injected into our spiritual Tetuwan ways where none has existed before.
We must not tell people what they should believe….they need to find the real truth for themselves…it is each & everyones responsibility to do so.
“By closing the door to our faith and ancient rites to ‘outsiders,’ the Proclamation closes the Sacred Hoop-Circle of Life that is supposed to include all life upon Mother Earth.
Instead of having compassion for the thousands of people worldwide who sincerely wish to learn Tetuwan ceremonies, these people are met with the closed fist of AIM, or are fleeced of their money…& lots of it.
Instead of taking the awesome task to teach them, the writer of the Proclamation, Arvol Looking Horse wants to corner the ceremonial-spiritual market with AIM, guarding the income & donations from selling our Sacred Tetuwan ceremonies, and dictates whom may or may not come into the Sacred Circle-the Hoop of Life” that joins all living things within the Universe together when the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin is used in the proper manner… for all living things Creator has made, for the good of all mankind… regardless of race, creed, color, gender or blood quantum.
She Also Lays Down A Challenge
“I believe that whoever has possession of The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin should be doing ceremonies, like the White Buffalo Calf Cannunpa Revival Ceremony at Sun Dance yearly, as Grandfather Fools Crow and other Lakota medicine & holy men and women have in the past.
The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin should be used to strengthen our faith and personal relationship with our Father, Creator.
“I know Lakota, Dakota and Nakota traditional Elders & Oyates would like to see the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin made available to our Tetuwan Nations at this time.
It is the Sacred vessel of prayer of the people who believe in Creator & his wisdom, not a select few of spiritual abusers of the Sacred & sellers of our Sacred ceremonies.”
What Dupree may have started with this “Proclamation” of her own may have greater power and farther reach than if she indeed holds The Pipe- the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin.
As a mother or grandmother would chastises her children, HakiktaWin-Looking Back Woman observes:
“It is important that balance between men and women be honored once again for objective decision making for the good of all people.
We must have the democratic process we possessed in ancient times.
These people are calling themselves traditional when they are really urban, militant domestic terrorists, do not really represent the traditional viewpoint of the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin.
Without the presence and participation of women at these meetings and ceremonies, they are simply acting like immature little boys.
“I feel that it is so important for everyone who believes, and practices our Tetuwan Lakota faith, to be encouraged by being able to see & enjoy the temporal benefits our Sacred Cannunpa.
It is really the people’s Cannunpa, It belongs to the Nations of people who believe in Its teachings, instructions & Sacred Lifeways brought to us by White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman, Whope from our Father, Creator.
The Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin is not a tool of spiritual materialism, belonging to a select few.
I, HakiktaWins belief is, as Grandfather Fools Crow tried to teach us, that anyone is welcome, as long as they are pure of heart, and follow the our Tetuwan Lakota protocols.”
Does Dupree Have The Pipe Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin?
This is hard to independently assess, at least, from a distance.
There is plenty of room for speculation.
As stated, each of the Seven Council Fires Council of the Tetuwan Oyate had two Pipes: One carried by a man, one by a woman; and all were brought to the governing Tetuwan Council.
Nothing is known of where the original 14 Cannunpas went.
The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin she carries could be one of those.
It is also said that Fools Crow had made 14 copies of The Pipe, the Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, which he passed to select true pure heart traditional individuals from the 1940s and onward.
It could be one of those Cannunpas…..what sets Looking Back Womans Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin apart from all other duplicates of this template, is the lightening bolts at the feet of the buffalo facing the bowl.
But It could very well be The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin she claims It is, & has been verified byTetuwan Oglala Lakota, Phil Lane Senior and Beatrice Medicine, & Father Paul Manhart SJ, all well know & well educated people whom have assured Looking Back Woman what she carries is the authetic original catlinte White Buffalo Calf Cannunpa.
Not to in any way impugn Chief(who made him a Chief) self-appointed… Arvol Looking Horse, who has a perfect right to respond or not respond to any questions without prejudice or drawing any untoward conclusions…other than they are nothing but lies.
However, Dupree also raises detailed questions about the Cannunpa, the so-called Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin… said to be in Looking Horses possession, and made all the more persuasive by Its absence in ceremony and his silence….
Watch the May 2009 Marie Elk Head Utube video which dispells any questions about what Looking Back Woman has said about Looking Horse & the American Indian Movement frauds.
The claims and uncertainty, however, pose great risks.
This issue has the potential to rend apart those who follow the traditions of the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate and, in Native America as a whole, reignite sensitive issues of race, gender and who holds spiritual authority….which originally before contact & AIM was the women.
(Nothing is more real than the woman’s superiority.
It is they who really maintain the tribe, the nobility of blood, the geological tree, the order of generations and conservation of families.
In them resides all the real authority: the lands, the fields and all their harvest belong to them; they are the soul of the councils, the arbiters of peace and war,
they hold all the taxes and public treasure; it is to them that the slaves are entrusted;
they arrange the marriages; the children are under their authority; and the order of succession is founded on THEIR blood….
The Council of Elders which transacts all the business does not work for itself.
It seems that they serve only to represent and aid the women in the matters in which decorum does not permit the latter to appear or act….
The women choose their chiefs among their maternal brothers or their own children.
Father Joseph-Francois Lafitau
Customs of the American Indians
compared with the Customs of Primitive Times 1724)
The whole ugly system of male patriarchy, tribal membership, federal government control, and blood-quantum stand to be regurgitated anew, spilling over into renewed resentments between tribes and Indians and non-Indians over who is “qualified” to practice Native American Spirituality, why and how.
(Check out the AIM fraudsters blood quantum, eh…)
The issue also has the potential to unite peoples, if fear and resentments can be turned away.
For this, two issues should be remembered:
First, the Cannunpa-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin, because of Its great power, cannot be reduced to logical thinking or rational explanation.
It is the physical expression of The Power, Creator, The Great Mystery, The Apportioner.
All true matters of Spirit such as the workings of the Cannunpa are outside rational explanation, because only human beings in the egoic state try to reduce the world and all things to an understandable level and, hence, can only be wrong.
Not even close.
The power of our Father, Creator is too great, broad, deep, eternal, beyond words or even human conceptualization.
Second, it doesn’t matter, in the final analysis, if Looking Back Woman has The Pipe-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin or another Pipe-Cannunpa.
All Cannunpas held in Sacred Manner are The Pipe when it comes to Creator’s Power. It is always The Sacred Pipe, not a facsimile, for Creator’s Power cannot be “faked.”
As a Pipe Carrier, Looking Back Woman, when holding The Pipe, whether it is The Cannupa Wakan-Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin or any other Cannunpa, is speaking her truth and should be respected for the truth she shares.
HakiktaWins words may be true, whether The Truth or A truth, holding a Pipe, or The Pte Hincala Cannunpa Kin.
It will be up to the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate to decide if the truth she speaks while holding the Pipe or The Pipe is The Truth.

Marie Elk Head Fiddler is a Grand daughter of William Elk Head, This is the true original family of the Sacred …
And the truths she gives are worth pondering beyond the confines of the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Oyate.
Is it not true that our world is out of balance? Is it not true that our Earthly Mother is in sore need of healing and that the divine female power is equal to the male power?
How can our world be balanced when the male and female powers are out of balance?
Do we not each carry these powers within ourselves with a duty to make them manifest?
And if we cannot honor all our relations in balance in this way, how can we hope to heal and balance the Earth?
In the Oyate’s own way, was it not a woman, PtesanWi, White Buffalo Woman, who brought The Pipe to the Buffalo Nation?
And did she not say, “The four ages of creation are in me;
I am the four ages.
I will come to see you in every generation cycle . . . .”?
Did she not say: “Toksha ake wacinyanitin ktelo, I shall see you again.”
Maybe, in a way, this is the return…. a recognition that balance is needed again, a call for us all to be Looking Back, honoring the Women.
In this, we must remember where Power resides, truly, eternally.
Who holds The Pipe in his or her hands is ultimately of little value to who holds The Pipe in his or her heart.
Creator gives us the eyes to see and hearts to ponder with which to see the Truth.
In that way, we all carry the only Pipe that is eternal: Creator, within.
That is the medicine that matters.
